Alexander Ballantyne is from Southern California and is passionate about improving outcomes for youth in the foster care system. Having spent eighteen years in the child welfare system himself, Alexander understands firsthand the challenges young people face when navigating instability and building independence. These experiences have shaped his commitment to advocacy and public service. He lives by the idea that no matter where someone begins, they always have the power to choose who they become.

Alexander is currently a student at the University of California, Santa Barbara, where he studies philosophy. Alongside his academic work, he dedicates much of his time to advocacy for foster youth and policy reform. He serves on the board of directors for organizations working to expand educational access and long-term support for youth in care. Alexander has also spoken publicly about his experiences through the documentary Possible Selves, as well as at universities and community events.

Believing that young people who have lived through the foster care system should have a voice in shaping policies that affect them, Alexander channels his passion into action through advocacy work focused on improving support for transition-age youth and expanding opportunities for education and stability.

Outside of advocacy, Alexander enjoys reading philosophy, playing tuba, and is a member of UCSB’s Ethics Bowl team.
