For 10 years, the National Foster Youth Institute has built a community of current/former foster youth, decision makers, and supporters who have shared one goal: redefining child welfare to make the foster care system a beacon of hope for children and families. Join us as we celebrate 10 years of impact and discuss what comes next as we help create brighter futures for our nation’s children. Your support of NFYI’s annual event will help cover the operating costs of the following core programs that equip NFYI members with the tools and skills to mobilize current and former foster youth and educate decision makers:

National Voices — Our National Voices program develops platforms for foster youth voices to be lifted up and heard at both the local and federal levels. National Voices develops opportunities for constituents of care to tell their stories, share their ideas, and hone their leadership skills. Our virtual town hall series is helping Members of Congress develop and support effective legislation that is improving child welfare systems across the country. And our Congressional dinners, briefings, and listening sessions are creatingspace for decision makers to hear first-hand about the impact of their policies.

NFYI Local Chapters — Our local chapters are supported by NFYI’s professional staff and led by current and former foster youth between 18 and 30. Members participate in retreats, attend local Shadow Days with their state representatives, host briefings for city and county officials, and develop creative outreach events to engage and educate their peers. NFYI currently has chapters in Los Angeles, CA; Washington,DC; Michigan; and New Jersey.

Internships — NFYI’s paid internship programs ensure that foster youth voices are the foundation of ourwork and help prepare participants for future jobs. By creating internships that support NFYI’s mission and help solidify professional skills, we’re developing the next generation of leaders who are better prepared for the workforce. Interns are currently leading efforts to educate their peers around the COVID-19vaccine, address homelessness, and knock down barriers to attaining higher education.

Congressional Foster Youth Shadow Day — Since 2012, NFYI has partnered with the Congressional Caucus on Foster Youth to host foster youth and alumni of care (ages 18-30) in Washington, D.C., where they’re paired with their Congress members for a day. A week of trainings culminate in a day spent with members of Congress that gives delegates the opportunity to connect face-to-face with their own representatives and get a behind-the-scenes look at the legislative process.
Your support at this year’s event is an investment in growing a grassroots movement to change the child welfare system!
