NFYI members are young people who are passionate about leading their communities, transforming systems, and defying statistics to achieve their goals and dreams.
They are young adults between 18 and 30 who are current or former foster youth. They bring lived experience, creativity, and heart; our programs provide them with training, skills development, policy education, a platform to strategically share their stories, and community.
Foster youth who are leaving care are at high risk of poor outcomes due to complex needs. They often experience low levels of financial, familial, and community support, which can lead to housing insecurity, unemployment, financial difficulties, and justice system involvement. NFYI is building a community of support that recognizes the value of lived experience and provides resources and opportunities for all youth aging out of foster care.
NFYI members play a vital role in how our organization operates, serve as community organizers, and offer valuable insight and recommendations to decision makers across the country on issues that impact child welfare.
“To know that I was a part of change and that another foster youth won’t have to go through the same things as me is all I care about. This part of my journey has been amazing and is not over. I cannot wait to continue the work.”
