American Baptist College’s Chelsea Clark (’18) had the pleasure of meeting TN Congressman Jim Cooper last month in May, National Foster Care Month. Congressman Cooper, a longtime advocate of adoption and foster care reform, believes that government has a role to play in helping the nation’s children. Which is why a few years back he introduced the Adoption Equality Act, which extended assistance payments to families who adopt children with special needs. Chelsea, 19, is in the DCS Extension of Foster Care program which works with young people who age out of foster care by providing support similar to what parents provide their young adults — guidance on education, housing, finances and they offer mentorship and connections to the community. The DCS Extension staff chose Chelsea Clark this past Spring to be the recipient of a free 2006 Mustang this spring — a gift donated to her by Jaimee Brown who chose to give her car to a young person who had been in foster care.
