Foster care parents and children’s advocates examined ways to address the rapidly growing number of juveniles in Kansas’ troubled foster care system during a forum Monday evening. The event was organized by Strengthen Families Rebuild Hope and took place at the Topeka and Shawnee County Public Library. The Department for Children and Families has come under fire following allegations the agency underreported child deaths, failed to adequately act after children in foster care went missing and routinely missed in-person visits. The coalition is planning to host several forums around the state to discuss the foster care system.According to the group, there were 7,324 Kansas kids in foster care in January — about 2,000 more compared to five years ago.“That’s caused our system to really be beyond capacity and that’s created a whole lot of other challenges for kids and the system,” said Michael Pahr, public policy director for Kansas Appleseed, an organization that belongs to the coalition.
