In addition to serving as an Associate Dean and a Clinical Associate Professor at the University of Southern California’s School of Social Work, Smith is a licensed social worker, author, and is involved with a number of organizations including the Los Angeles County Commission for Children and Families, United Friends of the Children, Venice Family Clinic, Human RIghts Watch, Children’s Rights Division, the Anti-Recidivism Coalition, and the National Foster Youth Institute. She has won numerous awards including the Nancy Daly Founder Award, the 2013 United Friends of the Children Award, and The National Foster Institute 2016 Champion of Children and Youth Award.
